Select the BMW M3 model year you want to research current market prices for
A high-performance variant of BMW’s compact 3 Series, the M3 made its debut in 1986 and immediately furthered BMW’s reputation of building well-engineered, practical driver’s cars. The first generation car, built on BMW’s E30 platform, was oriented toward touring car racing and came with a high-revving 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, flared fenders, a large rear wing, and numerous performance enhancements over the normal 3 Series. The second generation E36 M3 of 1992 gained a larger six-cylinder engine and grew in size but retained its driver-focused dynamics and impressive performance. The E46 generation of 2000-06 was even better and its clean, understated lines resulted in one of the best-looking cars of the 2000s. The E90/E92/E93 versions of 2007-13 introduced the M3’s first and only V-8 engines. That car’s replacement, the F80 M3, reverted to straight-six power and added two turbochargers. This generation also marked a shift in BMW nomenclature as the M3 became a four-door sedan only. Its two-door counterpart was renamed the M4. Regardless of year, M3s are typically track-capable and take well to performance modifications, but they are also solid and practical enough to drive every day or on a cross-country road trip. Perhaps more than any other model, the M3 exemplifies BMW’s tagline of “Ultimate Driving Machine.”
