Model overview
Model description
Cadillac launched a new engine for the 1970 Eldorado. It was the biggest Cadillac’s biggest ever production at 8.2 liters, or 500 cubic inches. The new engine was announced with a badge beside the redesigned grille, which now had bold horizontal bars. This was also the final year of the original front-drive Eldorado design that debuted in 1967.
The 500 cid engine was only available in the Eldorado this year but would spread to all other models in 1971, and last until 1976. Power increased to 400 bhp and the longer-stroke engine boasted 550 lbs feet of torque. A power sunroof was offered and would become increasing popular, although the next generation Eldorado would offer a convertible option.
Base price for the Eldorado was $6903 but options frequently increased final prices by 30 percent. Sales for the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado totaled 23,842, up slightly from 1969.
The Eldorado was available with leather bucket seats as an option or a bench seat with folding center armrest. Popular options included air conditioning, power sunroof, tilt/telescopic steering column, remote trunk release, rear window defogger, special carpet package, AM/FM radio, vinyl roof, power seat, power door locks, cruise control, tinted glass, heated front seats, and automatic headlight dimmer.
Magazine road tests indicated that 1970 Eldorado was about as fast as the 1969 model, despite the 500 cid V-8. From a standing start, 60 mph came up in 8.8 seconds and a quarter-mile in 16.37 seconds at 85.5 mph, which was comparable to the Lincoln Continental Mk III.
