Model overview

Model description

For Chevrolet, the big news for 1964 was the launch of the new mid-size Chevelle, and the Corvette lost its split rear window and fake intakes on the hood. Production reached 1,574,468 for the year and more than half (889,600) were 1964 Chevy Impalas.

The Impala Super Sport was now its own line and 35 percent of the 536,329 Impala two-door Hardtops were Super Sports – about 155,000 cars. Convertible Impala and Super Sport production totaled 81,897 units, with around 30,000 of those being Super Sport models. The Super Sport two-door Hardtop carried a base price of $2,947, while the Convertible began at $3,196.

The 1964 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport models could be recognized by different side molding, unique wheels covers and the SS emblem on the rear quarters. SS models featured an all-vinyl interior with bucket seats and center console with four-speeds and Powerglide automatic transmission. The lowered center theme on the 1963 trunk was moved to the front for 1964, while the trunk lid was now flat. A chrome strip ran from the center of the hood clear to the taillights, which were located three on each side with a stamped alloy panel between them.

Base engines were the 140 bhp 230 cid six and the 195 bhp 283 V-8. A 250 bhp 327 V-8 was available for $191, a 300 bhp 327 with a four-barrel and dual exhaust was $245, a 340 bhp 327 V-8 with solid lifters and dual exhaust was $349, a 409 V-8 with dual exhaust and high lift cam was $428, and the top-level 425 bhp 409 cubic-inch V-8 with dual four-barrels and high lift cam was $484. Both the 409 options required a four-speed manual gearbox. The Impala’s base transmission was a three-speed manual gearbox, and an overdrive cost $108.

Conventional luxury options included air conditioning ($364), tinted glass ($36), Impala comfort and convenience group ($31), power brakes ($43), power steering ($75), and six-way power seat ($97).

Chevrolet offered 15 exterior colors for 1963 and 10 two-tones. They were Tuxedo Black (900), Meadow Green (905), Bahama Green (908), Silver Blue (912), Daytona Blue (916), Azure Aqua (918), Laguna Aqua (919), Almond Fawn (920), Ember Red (922), Saddle Tan (932), Ermine White (936), Desert Beige (938), Satin Silver (940), Goldwood Yellow (943), and Palomar Red (948).

Two-tone color combinations included Ermine White/Tuxedo Black, Ermine White/Ember Red, Ermine White/Satin Silver, Ermine White/Silver Blue, Ermine White/Azure Aqua, Ermine White/Meadow Green, Silver Blue/Daytona Blue, Azure Aqua/Laguna Aqua, Desert Beige/Almond Fawn, and Desert Beige/Saddle Tan. Interior colors were Blue, Green, Red, Fawn, Aqua, and Gold. Impala convertible tops were normally black or white and color keyed interiors were a mix of cloth and vinyl.
