Model overview
Model description
Looking for middle ground, GM introduced the Chevrolet Monte Carlo in 1970. It was a personal luxury coup based on the 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix. Sporty SSpackages were now concentrated on the Chevelle, Monte Carlo and Nova, though you could still get an SS 396 option for the Impala. A new and very elegant Camaro was introduced in mid-1970, though no convertible was offered.
The full size Chevrolets, meanwhile, were face-lifted. The loop front bumper was dropped and the rear bumper redesigned with vertical taillights incorporated in it – still three on each side for the 1970 Chevy Impala. Front fenders were now crowned over the quad headlights and the Impala Sport Coupe and Custom Coupe shared the formal roofline of the Caprice, rather than the fastback. Full-size car sales were still led by the 1970 Impala.
Impala prices began at $3012 for the four-door Sedan to $3,589 for the nine-passenger Station Wagon. The base engines were still the 155 bhp six and the 250 bhp 350 V-8.
Options included air conditioning ($363.40-$463.45), power front disc brakes ($65.55), power steering ($89.55-$105.35), mag-style wheel covers ($52.70-$73.75), power door locks ($35.80-$54.50), console ($53.75), two-tone paint ($23.20), six-way power seat ($100.10), power Strato bucket seat ($121.15), cruise control ($57.95), tilt steering column ($46), Rally wheels ($36), special wheel covers ($55.79-$80.70) and rear defroster ($41.40).
A total of 20 exterior colors were offered for the 1970 Chevrolet Impala, along with six two-tones. They were Aegean Aqua, Classic White (10), Cortez Silver (14), Shadow Gray (17), Tuxedo Black (19), Astro Blue (25), Mulsanne Blue (26), Fathom Blue (28), Misty Turquoise (34), Citrus Green (43), Green Mist (45), Forest Green (48), Gobi Beige (50), Camaro Gold (530), Champagne Gold (55), Autumn Gold (58), Desert Sand (63), Hugger Orange (65), Classic Copper (67), Cranberry Red (75) and Black Cherry (78).
Two-tone color combinations included (top color first) Dover White/Glacier Blue Dover White/Azure Turquoise Dover White/Azure Gold, Dusk Blue/Glacier Blue, Glacier Blue/Dusk Blue and Champagne/Burnished Brown.
Color keyed interiors were a mix of cloth and vinyl, or vinyl. Interior colors were Black, Dark Blue, Dark Green, Medium Green, Turquoise, Parchment or Gold or Red. Impala Convertible tops could be Black or White. Vinyl roofs could be Black, White, Red, Dark Blue, Dark Brown, Parchment or Dark Green.
