Chrysler first used the “Dart” name on a pair of Italian-bodied show cars in the 1950s, but the first production Dodge Darts came about in 1960, on Dodge’s new lower-priced full-size model. It then became a mid-size for 1962 and shrank again to a compact for 1963 in order to align with changing market demands for smaller automobiles. This compact Dart is the best-known of the series and it became a high-volume seller for Chrysler, with a wide variety of body styles and engine options. There were sporty GT, GTS and Swinger models with sizable V-8 engines in a lightweight package, but there were also utilitarian wagons, family four-door sedans, and open-air convertibles. A major update for the compact Dart came for 1967, and the model was discontinued after 1976. Today, the Dart’s main appeal is in the performance variants that offer classic American muscle style and performance in a package that is typically more affordable than other, larger classic muscle cars.
