Model overview
Model description
The 1991 Ford Mustang was carried over largely unchanged from 1990 with the major changes that arrived in 1987. While Fox body fans focus on the venerable 5.0-liter V-8, the base four-cylinder had an updated cylinder head with two spark plugs per cylinder, and output rose from 90hp to 105hp, while torque jumped from 122 pound-feet to 140 pound-feet. Power went through a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
The 5.0-liter V-8, meanwhile, continued to put out 225 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque. Transmission options were either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. For those selecting the convertible model, a new power convertible top stowed more snugly into the body, resulting in a cleaner look for the ragtops.
5.0L V-8 models also got new 16x7-inch cast aluminum wheels with a five-spoke pattern. This was for both the LX and GT fitted with the V-8. Buyers could get the 1991 Ford Mustang as a coupe (“notchback”), hatchback (“fastback”) or convertible. Of the 98,737 built, the least popular model was the notchback, with 19,447 sold. 57,777 fastbacks were sold this year, meaning you have the highest chance of finding this more desirable body style from this year.
The rarest of the 1991 Ford Mustangs was the Saleen SC Mustang. These cars featured revised aerodynamic body kits, a large two-tier rear wing, and a number of engine modifications that brought output up to 304 horsepower. Other mods on the Saleen included unique wheels and tires and a performance-tuned suspension. Only 10 Saleen Mustangs were built in 1991 making them absolute collectors’ items.
