Select the Mazda RX-7 model year you want to research current market prices for
Mazda had been experimenting with Wankel rotary engine power since the 1960s and sold several cars like the Cosmo and RX-3 using the technology, but the 1978 introduction of the RX-7 brought the company massive sales success and established Mazda as a purveyor of agile, accessible sports cars. The RX-7’s rotary engine delivered ample power relative to its displacement and size, while its simple but elegant pointed coupe design and roomy interior tempted thousands of buyers. This first generation of the RX-7 is now known as the SA generation for cars built from 1978-80, with later series built from 1981-85 known as the FB cars. A second generation, sometimes referred to as the FC generation, debuted in 1985 retained the 13B-series rotary engine but added an available turbocharger and convertible model along with slightly more rounded looks similar to the Porsche 944. The third (FD) generation, launched in 1992, brought the RX-7 to an entirely different level in terms of performance, technology, and price. Its sequential twin-turbo setup boosted the rotary to over 250 horsepower while the rounded bodywork is one of the best-looking of the entire 1990s. Market forces led to the RX-7’s discontinuation in the early 2000s. The four-door RX-8 kept the rotary going for another decade, but it never gained the same kind of following as the original three generations of RX-7, which have become the cars most closely associated with rotary engine technology along with both its advantages and its disadvantages.
