Model overview

Model description

For 1984, the third generation Pontiac Firebird was once again largely unchanged but featured small, thoughtful changes to update Pontiac’s pony car. For example, the available T-Top model went from strap-style fasteners to pin-style lockdowns.

Trims remained as base, S/E, and Trans Am. The base engine was the four-cylinder “Iron Duke” and featured a new compression ratio, new spark plugs, and other mods, bringing output up to 125 horsepower. The Firebird S/E featured either the V-6 engine with 107 horsepower, or 125 horsepower with the available High Output V-6. It had front and rear stabilizer bars and upgraded suspension.

V-8 engine options were a carbureted 5.0-liter unit with 145 horsepower or the High Output throttle-body injected 5.0-liter unit with 190 horsepower. These 1984 Firebird Trans Am models were now available with the W62 ground effects package from the ’83 Pace Car models, and High Output models now featured hydraulic clutches.

The Recaro T/A edition was updated and removed the gold striping from the bottom of the car. This edition was now all black, but had gold accents. It also featured the WS6 handling package (available on other models), the “Turbo Hood,” and gold lettering.

Pontiac celebrated fifteen years of the Firebird with the 15th Anniversary Edition. It was blue and white with T-Tops, the W62 ground effects, “Turbo Hood,” and unique pin striping and medallions. It was fitted with the High Output V-8 engine. The 16-inch wheels on this special edition were a first for a Pontiac.

1984 was the best-selling year for the Pontiac Firebird, with over 128,000 units sold. Just 1,500 of those were the 15th Anniversary edition, and just 500 of those came with the Borg-Warner 5-speed manual, making them highly collectable.
