Model overview
Model description
The original Porsche 924 was a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen that provided Porsche with an entry-level model to replace the mid-engine 914. For most of its production run, the 924 used an Audi-sourced 2.0-liter engine, while the 924’s widebody cousin the 944 used a proper Porsche-designed 2.5-liter four. In 1984, however, Volkswagen decided to stop production of the engine blocks that had been used by the 924.
Porsche’s solution was to use the engine from the 944 and put it into the narrow body 924, although in the 924 the engine was detuned a bit to 150hp. The suspension was also improved. The 924 was then reintroduced to the American market as the 924S.
The 924S still has the characteristically sharp handling of the base 924, but is particularly appealing in that it has adequate power from its 944 engine without saddling the owner with the complications of a turbocharger as was the case with the earlier 924 Turbos.
To the casual observer, the 924S looks like most other 924s and some may even dismiss it as not being a “real” Porsche, but this car is essentially just a narrow body 944 and therefore thoroughly rewarding to drive. Of the entire 924 series, these cars are arguably the best to own.
