By 1955 Volkswagen had really arrived in the U.S., with sales jumping to 28,907 units. Volkswagen of America was founded on October 27, based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Meanwhile, the one-millionth Beetle came off the assembly line in Wolfsburg on August 5, and the year’s production totaled 279,986 cars, with 273,724 sedans and 6262 cabriolets.

The Beetle was now taken seriously by the U.S. press and Motor Trend magazine commented “For a lot of people, Volkswagen gives near sports car feel, comfort, high quality, economy and practical innovations.”

Prices rose again in 1955. Some reports indicate that the base sedan was discontinued in the U.S. and the color Jupiter Gray was only available on that model. The Deluxe sedan now cost $1595, the Sunroof Sedan was $1675, and the Cabriolet $2195.

Seven Sedan paint colors were available: Black (L41), Jupiter Gray (L225), Strato Silver (L227), Reed Green (L313), Jungle Green (L315), Polar Silver (L324) and Nile Beige (L370).
