Model overview
Model description
The 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupes and Convertibles underwent few changes as the factory concentrated on the launch of the 1500 cc Type 3 version of the Karmann Ghia. Updates included a combination ignition starter switch, a redesigned Volkswagen badge, seat belt anchors and improved insulation. Karmann Ghia production rose slightly to 18,812 Coupes and 4570 Convertibles.
The Coupes and Convertibles continued to attract a dedicated following. Buyers were attracted by the range of colors, excellent finish, reliability and excellent dealer and service network. Fans of the Karmann Ghia appreciated its style rather than its modest performance.
Times for 0-60 mph were still in the 24-second range, but top speed was now about 75 mph and could be maintained. The occasional rear seats were suitable for children, something few other sporty European cars offered.
The Convertible was prized for its excellent lined and insulated top, which was both waterproof and tight fitting. It also folded down into the rear well, unlike the top in the Beetle Convertible, which severely limited rear vision when lowered.
Little noticed in the U.S. was the launch of a new Karmann Ghia Type 3 (aka the Type 34) model in Europe with a larger greenhouse and curly designs on the nose separating the headlights. A total of 42,500 “new” Ghias were sold over seven years (most in Germany) but the model was never marketed in the U.S. and few were imported.
