Model overview
Model description
Volkswagen was riding a worldwide wave of popularity in 1964, and this included an increase in Karmann Ghia production with 25,267 Coupes sold along with 5262 Convertibles. Prices remained the same, with the Coupe costing $2295 and the Convertible $2495.
More than six of every 10 imported cars sold in the U.S. were now Volkswagens and the number of dealerships climbed from 750 to 845. VW estimated 1.6 million of its Beetles, Transporters and Karmann Ghias were running on U.S. highways.
Volkswagen changes for 1964 included perforated vinyl upholstery replacing the solid leatherette material and the sunroof was now steel, painted the same color as the car. Dual thumb-push buttons replaced the chrome plated horn ring. The controls and buttons on the dash were now Silver Beige color instead of black and the black painted letters on the hubcap were now unpainted and hard to read.
