Model overview

Model description

1969 was the last year for the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 1500 model. The independent rear suspension introduced the year before on semi-automatic models also extended to all Volkswagen models with 4-speed transmissions. With two double jointed constant velocity joints on each rear axle and trailing arms, this system eliminated the rear wheel “tuck under” problem with earlier cars when they cornered hard.

Separate seat headrests were introduced and the coupe now had a standard electric rear defroster. The Convertible gained a glass rear window to replace the fragile plastic one. The gas filler door had a remote release and the steering column ignition switch locked the steering when the key was removed. Radial tires were standardized.

Karman Ghia Coupe sales increased to 27,834 units, while Convertibles attracted 6504 buyers. Both were the model’s second best sales totals. Prices rose slightly, with the 1969 Karmann Ghia Coupe costing $2365 and the Convertible $2575. Common accessories included walnut steering wheel, radio, air conditioning, rubber floor mats and whitewall tires.

Only six exterior colors were offered this year, though two-tone paint jobs were optional at extra cost. Exterior colors were Oriole Yellow, Sunset Orange, Chrome Blue, Cypress Green, Toga White and Cherry Red. Convertible tops were Black or Light Sand canvas, unless special ordered.

As a footnote to the model year, the Type 3 Karmann Ghia Coupe finally ceased production in July 1969. Its sharply creased prow and large greenhouse never caught on beyond the borders of Germany, and only 42,498 were sold over its production run.
